Ryan RavanpakCourses :  EST 502, Ethical Decisions in Engineering

Broadly speaking, I study the ethics of technological innovation, development, and policy. This includes the impact that technological advancement can have on our relationships with each other and with ourselves, as well as within other domains like medicine and education. In addition, I am also interested in perspectives that non-western philosophy and aesthetics can offer us in our pursuit of questions pertaining to ethics, our collective humanity, and the good life.

Dr. Ravanpak earned a B.A. in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He wrote his dissertation on the relationship between personal identity and normative ethics. Prior to joining the Stony Brook faculty, he held the position of Tatelbaum Scholar in Ethics and Technology at Phillips Academy, Andover, cross-appointed between the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Tang Institute. He has collaborated on projects and taught at a number of other institutions including Northeastern University, Duke University's Social Science Research Institute, MIT's Teaching + Learning Lab, and MIT's Department of Experiential Learning.
